Frequency
Train all major muscle groups at least two days per week.
Beginners can start with two nonconsecutive full-body sessions. A third weekly session may be added later if recovery is good and the goal includes gaining more muscle or strength.
Repetitions and Intensity
Choose a resistance that allows you to perform approximately 8 to 12 controlled repetitions with good technique.
The final repetitions should feel challenging, but beginners do not need to reach complete muscular failure. Leaving approximately one to three possible repetitions before failure is a practical way to maintain technique and reduce unnecessary fatigue.
The latest ACSM guidance notes that training to complete muscular failure is not consistently necessary for the average healthy adult.
